The Trial of the Chicago 7.
Excellent film, and if you haven’t seen it yet, jump onto Netflix, grab some popcorn and get ready for two hours of an extremely well-made political, drama, thriller.
This film has been in the works for several years, with development of the script beginning as far back as 2006 when Steven Spielberg was onboard as producer. But the 2007 Writers Guild of America strike kept the film at bay for some time.
Development of the script ramped up and down many times from 2006-2018, during which time there have been a lot of changes to cast, producers and directors including the exit of Paul Greengrass, Ben Stiller, Seth Rogen, Will Smith and Steven Spielberg - in the end writer, Aaron Sorkin took on the role of director and kicked some ass!
With heavy hitting stars like Academy Award winners including Eddie Redmayne and Mark Rylance; plus Academy Award nominees: Sacha Baron Cohen, Michael Keaton, Frank Langella, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, its no wonder the film managed to be so compelling and provocative.
This film tells a historical, political story of 8 young conscientious objectors all vehemently opposed to the Vietnam War, whom after organizing an intended, peaceful protest, wind up being tried for inciting violence upon the Chicago Police Force. I won’t give any further spoilers than that, because you REALLY just need to watch this one!!
Interestingly, I had not heard about this historical even until these past few years. And I’m not alone, back in 2006 when Spielberg approached Sorkin to write the screenplay, Sorkin had to ask his dad if he remembered a big trial after the National Democratic Convention in Chicago in 1968, because he also had never heard of it.
Well, it was real and it was unbelievable. The film is based on a true story which oddly really does mirror the times and political climate we are living in right now.
If political stirrings such as the
uprise against the Capitol and numerous events surrounding police brutality and
the BLM (Black Lives Matter) movement are of interest to you today, you will certainly
be enthralled, shocked, repelled and intrigued by The Trial of the Chicago 7.
Sold to Netflix by Paramount this past year for just $56M due to issues surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic, we can still expect the film to have a limited theatrical release. But exactly when, is still yet to be determined.
So, for now, you have 09 days to check it out on Netflix before watching the Academy Awards on April 25.
Let’s see if The Trial of the Chicago 7 takes the Best Picture Oscar! I believe it will and I'm willing to bet it is going to clean up in several other categories as well.
Excellent film, one of my favorites this year!
